James Costigan, psychotherapist

Growth rarely comes from comfort. Sometimes the conversations you need most are the ones you least want to have.

I work especially with men because so much of what they carry is carried in silence.

What brings men to therapy

You do not have to be at breaking point.

You may be functioning well on the outside while feeling anxious, flat, angry, disconnected or simply unsure what needs to change. Therapy gives us somewhere honest to begin.

01

Stress, anxiety and low mood

When your mind rarely switches off, pressure is building or life has begun to feel smaller.

02

Relationships and intimacy

Understanding conflict, distance, attachment, communication and what keeps repeating.

03

Confidence and direction

Working with self-esteem, motivation, identity, life changes and the sense of feeling lost.

04

Work and performance pressure

A grounded space for men carrying responsibility, career difficulty or expectations to perform.

05

Addictive or compulsive behaviour

Including alcohol, drugs, gambling, pornography and other sexual or online behaviours.

How I work

Person-centred at the core. Honest in the room.

My work is grounded in Carl Rogers' person-centred approach. That means empathy, genuineness and acceptance are not extras; they are the basis of the relationship. We work at a pace that feels right for you, without judgement or a performance to maintain.

I will listen properly

You will have space to say what is actually happening, including the parts that feel difficult to admit.

I will be real with you

I am warm and supportive, but I will not hide behind jargon or pretend that every conversation will feel comfortable.

We will make sense of it together

I do not treat you as a problem to fix. We work towards greater awareness, choice and trust in yourself.

Practical tools when they help

CBT, mindfulness and other practical ideas can support the work, while the therapeutic relationship remains central.

About James

A therapist who understands pressure, performance and starting again.

Diploma in Psychotherapy and Counselling · Registered Member MBACP 385914

Before training as a psychotherapist, I was a senior manager in a business with a turnover of approximately £50 million, responsible for more than 200 staff. I understand the pressure that comes with responsibility, performance, difficult decisions and being expected to stay capable even when something is not right underneath.

I now work mainly with men across a broad range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, relationships, confidence, career pressure, addiction, sexuality and personal development. Recovery is an important part of my practice, but it is not the whole practice.

Sessions

Online, private and built around a real conversation.

Video sessions

Meet online from a private place where you can speak openly and without interruption.

Phone sessions

A straightforward alternative when video does not feel comfortable or practical.

Messaging is not offered as a therapy service. Availability and suitability are discussed before work begins.

From the practice

A private recovery tool for the moments between sessions.

The recovery app grew from years of working with unwanted pornography use and other compulsive online sexual behaviours. It helps adults understand what they are feeling and choose a realistic next step.

Anonymous client review · November 2022

James has very quickly understood areas where I need support and honest feedback, which has very quickly helped me course correct in a more positive direction.

Anonymous client review · June 2025

James has been an excellent therapist for me over the past 4 months. I came to him in a very difficult situation and really struggling internally with myself, and how I felt about myself. He helped me develop a mental toolkit that has been invaluable to improving how I feel about myself and dealing with difficulties that arrive in my life. He's always been incredibly quick to respond to messages and never fails to help me understand more about myself. I couldn't recommend him highly enough.
